Second Generation

2. Sarah ROBERTS was born on 5 November 1722 in Essex County, VA.18,19,20 Not possible - Caroline County wasn't formed until 1728. She died about 1770 at the age of 48 in Amherst Co, VA.21 Susannah, Jacob's second wife is mentioned in Jacob's will as his wife. As Charles was her son, and he was born abt 1770 I'm assuming that that is the approximate time of Sarah's death and Susannah's marriage to Jacob.

Sarah ROBERTS and Jacob BROWN were married about 1750 in Albemarle Co, VA.22 This information came from Helen Nichols, Texas genealogist who first told me about the connection between Morris Roberts, my earliest known ancestor, and John Alexander Roberts. That occurred years ago, and I dismissed it because I could find not a shred of corroborating evidence. I still haven't found a single document that establishes that relationship, but a perfect Y DNA match between our Morris Roberts line and the J A Roberts line has proven the assertion. Descendants of the J A Roberts line are almost perfect matches to the male Roberts line proven descendants of Morris Roberts. Long story short, I am inclined to give anything Helen Nichols says seriously. She has stated that Jacob Brown married Sarah Roberts, first child of John Alexander Roberts and his unidentified wife. All information regarding Jacob Brown is provided by Helen Nichols.

I am estimating marriage date - Amherst County wasn't formed until 1761 and John is supposed to have moved his family, including Sarah around 1744 when Albemarle was formed - so I assume they married in Albemarle County. I have no proof of any of this right now. Jacob BROWN was born about 1720. Based on the fact that Sarah Roberts, his first wife, was born in 1722. On 15 December 1749 he acquired at 91 ac on south of Roanoak River in Augusta Co, VA23 On 15 July 1760 he acquired Patent for 140 ac in Albemarle County, VA24 On 7 July 1763 Jacob acquired 90 ac North side of Tye River on brances of Black Creek in Amherst Co, VA25 On 16 February 1771 he acquired 99 ac on north branches of Browns Creek... in Amherst Co, VA26 27 In 1778–1780 he was a Licensed to keep an ordinary in Amherst Co, VA.28,29 Jacob sold 140 ac to John Brown in Amherst Co, VA on 1 March 1779.30 On 28 December 1785 he acquired 391 acres on the Kentucky River in Fayette Co, KY31 On 20 August 1786 he acquired 509 acres on the Kentucky River in Fayette Co, KY32 Jacob owned land adjacent to the Kentucky River on 4 December 1788 in Fayette Co, KY.33 He signed a will on 16 March 1789 in Amherst Co, VA.34         In the name of God Amen I Jacob Brown in Sickness of Body but of Sound mind, do make this my last Will & Testament And in the first place I give my Body to the Ground,& my Soul to God that gave me.  And after my Debts & Funeral Expences(sic) are paid, I do Demise of of(sic) my Worldle-Goods(sic) as follows.  Item, I leave to my beloved Wife Susannah Brown all my Estate both real & personal with the Land and Plantation & essentials and all the appurtenances belonging thereunto Induring(sic) her Life, and at her Deseace(sic) my Will& Desire is that my Land before Demised shall be Eqully(sic) Divided between my Sons Charles and James Brown, and if I died before my three children(Viz, Charles Betsey and James Brown comes of Lawfull Age It is my Will and Desire that the before named Charles, Betsey & James should be Raised,Educated & As the rest of my Children was. My will & desire is that at the Death of my Wife, that all my Estate then Remaining be Equely(sic) divided between my children (Viz) Sarah, John, Jacob, Henry, Maurice, Milley, Jane, Ellett, Susannah & Betsey Brown

And the names ring true - Dawson, Elliot, etc. I am not going to research this further, but it suggests a very interesting research opportunity for some younger researcher. I was simply trying to establish - with documentation - the Jacob Brown who married Sarah Roberts. Thanks to the Kentucky Land Office, other researchers, and some digging of my own, I think I have accomplished that.
