Nathan Crowell Paddock, born in East Dennis September 7, 1819. When a young man in his teens, went to Boston, securing a position with a wholesale grocery firm, learning the business. When the cry for gold was heard, he came to San Francisco on the steamer Unicorn, arriving October 31, 1849. In Memoriam: N. C. Paddock, Society California Pioneers
He was born in East Dennis, Mass., September 7, 1819 and he died in Oakland, California March 9, 1890. He was a son of Captain Judah and Mary Paddock and was one of eight children. His ancestors were English and were among the first settlers of Cape Cod. His father was a sea captain. Young Paddock attended school at the Brewster Academy until he was about 16 years old. After leaving school he went to Boston and obtained employment with David Snow who was a friend of his father where he remained until he was about 21 years of age. Upon becoming of age he went into partnership with his brother in the flour and grain business in which he continued until 1849. In September of which year he started for California arriving in San Francisco on the steamer "Unicorn" October 31 of the same year. He resided in San Francisco continuously until 1885 when he removed to Oakland. At an early date he founded a partnership with A H Barker in the grain and flour business under the firm name of Barber & Paddock, continuing in the business until about 1856. In 1854 he erected the building now standing on the NE corner of Front and Jackson streets in which for many years was the office of the California Steamship & Navigation Co. of which company he was one of the original stockholders.

He was married on the 27th day of July, 1857 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Mary E. White, daughter of Artemas White of that city. Two sons and three daughters were born to them, all of whom and his widow survive him. Mr. Paddock was successful in business and early acquired a fortune. Mr. Paddock was a modest and retiring man. He never solicited recognition as a public man. He was content to do his duty modestly and quietly as a private citizen. He was temperate in all things and his life as a businessman, citizen, husband and father was such as to reflect credit upon this association and worthy of following by the Native Sons of California Pioneers.

In view of the foregoing facts, your committee offers the following for adoption by our Society:
Resolved: That in the death of Nathan Crowell Paddock, this State has lost a useful citizen and this Society a worth member. Resolved: That the sympathy of the Society of California Pioneers be and is hereby extended the widow and children of the deceased in this day of their affliction.

Signed: R. Vandercook, O Livermore, T. L. Barker
