  3. Paddock Genealogy, Curfman, p 23. Robert Paddock...Patriarch of the Paddock Family in America, was born 1583-4, as claimed according to American records, County Dublin, Ireland, 16 Sept 1584, younger son of John Paddock, Blacksmith of Stephenstown and later of Tullygovan near Killany, Barony of Ardee, County Louth, Ireland... This makes good historical sense - assuming that they left France due to their Protestantism, like many others during the late 16th century, were give asylum in England. Elizabeth I was trying with little success to settle the "Irish Problem" and encouraged as much Protestant settlement in Northern Ireland as possible. So along with the Scots, these French immigrants would certainly have been encouraged to move with them.
  4. Paddock Genealogy, Curfman, p 21. 1593: His uncle Zachariah Paddock removed from Stephenstown, County Dublin, to a "messuage" in Ardee, County Louth, leased from Matthew Ball. 1607, 3 Apr.: Robert was bequeathed "the black-smith shop" in the inventory of his mother "Jane Paddock" made Killany 3 Apr. 1607 apparently the day his father John Paddock died. He was a blacksmith as were his father John Paddock, and in France, his uncle Jacques Paddoc and cousin Paul Paddoc of Le Cateau.
  5. Paddock Genealogy, Curfman, p 21. 1631-4 (about): Robert could have emigrated about this period, with his second wife, Mary, to Plymouth Colony, MA where he was a blacksmith and once a constable.
  6. New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol XII, 1858, p 220. Robert Paddock, the Pilgrim ancestor, was settled in Plymouth in 1634, and probably several years before and after that time.
[Since his first wife died in 1627 and he was married in Plymouth in Oct 1630, one can assume that he arrived prior to 1630.].
  7. New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol 12, July 1858, page 220. Robert Paddock, the Pilgrim ancestor, was settled in Plymouth in 1634, and probably several years before and after that time. 14. Paddock Genealogy, Curfman, p 23. Robert had married his wife Mary apparently by 1630, but no reference to their marriage or mention of her maiden surname or of her death has been found in the Plymouth Colony Records. She has been given as Mary Holmes whom Robert is said to have married as his second wife in Ireland 12 October 1630, daughter of Peter Holmes and Elizabeth Ireland, daughter of Lawrence Ireland, a weaver of Killany. Mary was given as sister of Francis Holmes who settled in Stamford, CT 1648 and who made his will in 1671.

This event was probably the entry in the Plymouth record of births, marriages, and burials which listed on the page dted 1649, the birth of a child to xxx Paddock with no name of the child shown; probably in March or April. However, Whittemore reports the following: "Susanna Paddock, born 1649." The two others registered before (the registration of Robert Paddock's children posthumously in Plymouth records) were Robert Jr, born 1634...and apparently Elizabeth Paddock, born ca 1632. Elizabeth has been named as the wife of William Palmer by the descendants of Robert Paddock - hence, son-in-law. Elizabeth was named after her grandmother, Elizabeth Holmes.
  23. Paddock Genealogy, Curfman, p 26. Elizabeth, b. abt 1634-5; married William Palmer, Jr. b. 27 June 1634 (MD 17:185). William has been found given as son of William and Elizabeth (Hodgkins) Palmer (TPC) and this latter William identified as a LT and a Representative of Yarmouth, MA (GDNE/TPC ix). Members of this Palmer family were said to have lived at one time at Dartmouth, MA, and to have removed to Newton, LI, NY 1656 (GDNE/TPC ix).
  24. The Colonial Genealogist, Vol 12, 1-2, Spring 1984, p 8. It has been generally accdepted that William Palmer Jr was the father of William Palmer II...Mary Palmer's child was born 27 June 1634 soon after William Palmer (Jr's) marriage to Elizabeth Hodgkins in March. As far as the village knew, the child was that of the elderly Mr Palmer and his young wife.

  53. North American, Vol 2, Issue 514, p 1. Early History of the Whale Fishery; The origin of the whale fishery we may justly trace to a foreign country. The Norwegians it seems were accustomed at an early period to take the whale in a casual manner ... As far back as 1667, we have in the second volumne of the Philosophical Transactions, a letter from Mr. Richard Norwood, who resided at the Bermudas, which states that the whale fishery had been carried in the bays of those island for two or three years...Meanwhile, the people of Cape Cod had reached considerable proficiency in this branch of enterprise, and their success induced the fishermen of Nantucket to adopt more vigorous and systematic measures for its prosecution. Accordingly, we find the inhabitants employing Ichabod Paddock as early as 1690, to instruct them respecting the best manner of taking the whale, and extracting the oil.

"It is one of the proudest traditions of the Capers that Ichabod Paddock of Truro was sent for by the people of Nantucket to teach them whatecraft." Savage wrote he was "the subject of a trifling tradition that he was invited 1690 from Cape Cod to Nantucket to teach the art of killing whales...when 18 years earlier James Leper had there been so engaged." 310. Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Vol XVI, p 618. He possibly married at Yarmouth, Rebecca Hand. No marrieage record has been found on Cape Cod and Hand is not a Cape family name. There was Hand family on Long Island, but no connection has been found to that family, see Dorothy Hand Dymond, Genealogy of the Hand Family (Baltimore, 1982) and Carol clark Johnson, Hand, Sisson and Scott (1981)
The Nauvoo Baptisms for the Dead in the Mississippi River for September 1840 show that Keziah (Paddock) Hendrickson had her parents William and Sarah Paddock, her grandparents Reuben and Rebecca Paddock, her uncle Jonathan Paddock, her great-grandfather --- Hand, her grandmother ---- Hand, and her brother-in-law ----Hand baptised by proxy into the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Frances L Ferguson). The son Reuben is listed below as probable because he named a daughter Grace Sears Paddock who was probably named for Reuben's sister Grace who married John Sears, see No. 367. There is no question that Ebenezer, William, and Jonathan were brothers and the above Nauvoo baptisms indicate that they were the sons of Reuben and Rebecca (Hand) Paddock, but he lack of birth or baptismal records for the sons and athe absence of Reuben from any record after his baptism in 1728, still makes this family unproved.

In the absence of Captain Brown, who is in San Francisco, I desire to inform the public that the steamer DEFENDER is detained this day at Sacramento in consequence of the California Steam Navigation Company failing to pay a note due by them to Arthur J. Brown or order, for five thousand dollars, said note having been protested for non-payment.
This is one of a series of notes given by the California Steam Navigation Company to Capt. Arthur J. Brown in part payment for his interest in the stamer Surprise, at the time of her transfer to their ownership and line, and the holder of said note, N C PADDOCK, comes on Capt. Brown for payment.
The whole thing must be apparent to every one, as being a scheme for crushing the DEFENDER and driving her from the river.
I make shi statement of facts, that the public may know the position in which we stand, and to correct any injurious rumors that may be circulated by this contemptible and arrogant combination, against which we shall surely triumph.
The DEFENDER will leave on her regular day hereafter.

  801. California Supreme Court Cases, Vol 11, p 393. Horr et. al. v. Barker et als.
The rule that a factor cannot pledge the goods of his principal is, in this State, confined to technical factors, when the rights of third parties are involved.
When A has six hundred barrels of flour on storage, and he sells to B one hundred, to C two hundred, and to D three hundred, and gives each a delivery order upon his warehouseman, and the purchasers all surrender their several orders to the warehouseman, without making any separation of each lot from the common mass, but voluntarily leave the flour standing on the books of the warehouseman to the credit of each purchaser for his proper number of barrels, it is a complete delivery to each purchaser and will pass the title to each.

The separation by the purchasers of their various lots is a mere matter of convenience among themselves, not affecting their rights as to their vendor or a mere trespasser.

  803. Daily Placer Times & Transcript, 11 Jan 1855,. LAW INTELLIGENCE; TWELFTH DISTRICT COURT - HON. E. NORTON - JAN 10; ATTACHMENT OF GOODS IN STORAGE;
Adams & co. vs. W R Gorham, et al. - This was an action to recover 162 barrels of flour, and $500 damages for detention thereof, levied on by the Sheriff by virtue of an attachment from the Fourth District Court, at the suit of Barker & Paddock vs. Tilden & Little, said flour being stored at the time of the levy in the Empire Warehouse on Beale street, kept by the said Tilden & Little. Upon the plaintiffs closing their case, the defendants counsel moved for a nonsuit, on the ground that the plaintiffs had failed to prove that at the time of said levy, the Sheriff separated the 162 barrels of flour from a bulk of 1800 in said warehouse, or that he levied upon any specific 162 barrels of flour.
The Court granted the motion, and a judgment of nonsuit was entered accordingly. It was understood that the questions of law involved would be more fully argued in a motion for a new trial.

  918. San Francisco Chronicle, 15 Sept 1918, page 15. Talented Girl Answers County's Call for Duty with Pershing
Miss Ruth Boucher is another of San Francisco's native daughters who has answered the call of her country. She was selected by the Government for her ability, personality and scholarship to go to France in the signal corps service. Her superior work in the long-distance department of the telephone company and her ability in speaking French made a happy combination of the knowledge required to occupy this position in Pershing's service.
About a week ago three young women left the San Francisco telephone office fully signed up with the Government, rating as lieutenants, completely outfitted. Mid smiles and tears many friends gathered at the ferry to see the girls depart and many boxes of sweets and flowers were cheerfully received, adding weight to the girls' already overflowing suitcases and handbags.
Miss Boucher is a graduate of the Polytechnic High School and was earnestly interested in the study of music, which she will resume upon her return home. She is a granddaughter of a California pioneer, Nathan C. Paddock, and is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Boucher. Her mother is the corresponding secretary of the Daughters of California Pioneers.
Miss Boucher was a most ardent worker and assisted in many ways to load the Christmas ship sent by the Chronicle to Belgian children at the beginning of this great struggle.
