  96. Family Documents, Data, Ephemera, http://www.scvcamp260.org/newsletter/2006/2006-02-Apr-May-NL.pdf. Preston Roberts, enlisted at the first call for volunteers in 1861. Roberts’ functioned unofficially as the Quartermaster under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. It is more than apparent that General Forrest had a great deal of confidence in Roberts. He was in charge of all funds for the food and was in command of 75 cooks. In the post-war era Roberts was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Preston Roberts died in June 1910.
  97. Family Documents, Data, Ephemera, Unknown Source. ...Schuyler also had a Mulatto mistress Mahalia, withwhom he would have seven more children. The fourth child of this union was Preston Roberts...In 1861 the War Between the States broke out and at the first call for soldiers, Fernando Scott and Preston would travel to Somerville, TN to join Capt. Ed Porter's Company which was part of Gen. Van Dorn's Command. Partison Rangers Co C. After six months Fernando would desert, returning to Collierville, TN. Fernando Scott was tried as a deserter and served time in jail. Preston would remain in the Confederate Army and was in Springhill when Van Dorn was killed by a jealous husband. General Nathan Bedford Forrest took over command of Van Dorn's men and Preston was made a Quartermaster. Gen. Forrest put Preston in charge of 75 cooks and trusted him with the money to procure supplies for the troops. According to Preston, he was "one of the most importantest men in the Army." Preston would serve in this position for the remainder of the war...
Preston was proud of his Confederate service and attended every Confederate Reunion he could. He joined Co. A Confederate Veterans and wore the uniform, cap and badge. "Uncle Press" took great pride in caring for the men of the company. After attending a celebration for Robert E. Lee's Birthday and watching Confederate Veterans receive Southern Crosses of Honor, Preston asked if he was entitled to one too. Immediately he received the endorsement of over 100 Veterans and the application was sent. Supposedly this was the first time a Southern Cross of Honor was presented to a man of color.
Preston and his family were members of New Bethel Baptist Church and this is where he would be buried on August 19, 1910. It is said of Preston that "When one views the various aspects of Memphis' socioeconomic landscape, one would be hard pressed to find an area in which the descendants of Schuyler Hayes(sic) Roberts and his mistress Mahalia are not prominently found.".
