Judah PADDOCK was born on 15 September 1681 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA.112,113,114 About 1700–1760 he was a Whaler in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA.115 He owned 20 shares common land in 1710 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA.116 Judah was elected as Selectman in 1718 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA.117 He owned 45 acres from David Alden on 5 June 1718 in Middleborough, Plymouth, MA.118 He was elected as Assessor for parish on 1 March 1728 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA.119 Judah died on 31 March 1770 at the age of 88 in Dennis, Barnstable, MA.60,112 He was buried in 1770 in Paddock Cemetery, East Dennis, Barnstable, MA.120,121 Some time around 1763 - when the King of Spain signed the Articles of Peace - this article appeared in an unknown newspaper of the time:
Extract of a private Letter from London dated the 19th of Oct. last.
"There is no Likelihood of War between the French or Spaniards, and Great Britain, all Matters being accommodated with Spain, his Catholick Majestly having at last ratified the Articles of Peace, and Orders are gone down to the several Yards to lay up the Fleet, & discharge and pay off the Men.
Last Saturday Capt. Paddock, Master of a Cape Cod Sloop, being on the Bowsprit of his Vessel with a Shovel, to throw some snow from off the Jibb, unfortunately losing his hold (and his Feet catching in the Shrowds) which unhappily caus'd him to fall Head foremost against the Gunnel of a Boat, by which Accident his Nose was cut off, (almost as with a Rasour) so that it hung only by the Skin of His Upper Lip; he being a strong, hale, hearty Man, no ways daunted, clap'd his Hand on his Nose, and went as fast as he could to a Doctor, bus(sic) he being indisposed could not take proper care of him, whereupon he went to another, by which Means he suffer'd long in the Cold; but at length his Nose was sewed on, and it is hoped that a good Cure will be effected.
The same Day Mr. Giles, who for many Years has kept one of the Winnisanet Ferry Boats, and his Wife, attempting to go over from Winnisanet to Charlestown, unhappily fell thro' the Ice, and were both drowned.
Unhappily, I do not know which Capt. Paddock this was - there were so many - so I'm not really attaching it to any member of this sea-going family - however, the story is too good to leave untold. If anyone knows which Paddock this story is about, please add this to their write-up. A copy of the newspaper article is in the Paddock Book
